Simon Thorogood is a fashion designer and artist whose work has been concerned with finding and applying novel ways of creating and communicating fashion design. He labels his work ‘Phashion’, a fusion of the scientific term, ‘phase transition’, (the transformation of one thing or phase to another) and fashion. Phashion describes a personal process of conceiving and transforming ideas for fashion from disparate sources.
His projects have frequently employed a degree of interactivity and encourage the role of an audience in determining, in part, the course or outcome of a fashion product or experience. The work seeks to examine how people engage with ideas and how they can continue and expand creative methods and questions through an active blend of invention and event, or what he terms “innovention”.
Through such playful approaches, Simon hopes to question how subsequent understandings and approaches might compliment and enrich the more established or conventional methods of fashion education and practice.
