Matilda Aspinall was born and educated in London. It was while she was studying for a BA in fine art at Goldsmiths College, she realized that her interest was more textile orientated with a particular fascination for historic dress. In 2010, she finished her master’s degree in curation at London College of Fashion where she was able to focus specifically on historic dress. For her PhD research, she is analysing refashioned historic garments and questioning whether it is possible to utilize the knowledge extracted from these adapted and refashioned pieces to find alternative ways of making contemporary clothing more sustainable.
In July 2012, she left her job as the senior researcher within a textile conservation studio to study full time for a PhD at Textile Environment and Design (TED), a research centre within Chelsea School of Art and Design, University of the Arts, London.
