Born in Carmarthenshire, Wales, Ainsley Hillard is currently based in Llandeilo. She trained at Middlesex University, London and graduated in 2000 with a First Class B.A. Honours Degree in Constructed Textiles. The recipient of the 2001 James Pantyfedwen Scholarship enabled her to undertake postgraduate studies. In 2003 she gained a Master of Arts in Visual Arts at Curtin University, Australia gaining a Distinction.
Ainsley has exhibited nationally and internationally, including Australia, Japan, Austria, Lithuania, and Finland. Her work to date has beenselected for the Valcellina Award, Italy, awarded first prize in the International Textile Exhibition, Belgium, the International Textiles Biennial Scythia, Ukraine and the Shell Fremantle Print Award, Australia. Her work is part of the Lloyd Cotsen Textile Traces Collection, USA and the Fibre Art Collection of the City of Chieri, Italy.
Her research continues to have an interdisciplinary approach, embracing both textile and non-textile materials and processes including traditional hand weaving, print, photography as well as audio-visual technologies.
